Incheon International Airport has become the first airport to deploy a fully automated International Remote Baggage Screening System (IRBS) that allows checked baggage to be cleared by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in South Korea before arrival in the United States.
Under the system, baggage belonging to passengers departing from or connecting through Incheon’s Terminal 2 is screened remotely by CBP, after which it is transferred directly to its destination.
“This is the first time a fully automated, DICOS-based baggage screening workflow has been executed between two sovereign countries,” said Sunghoon Eom of Smiths Detection, which specialises in screening technology for security.
The remote screening workflow removes a critical friction point in international-to-domestic connections. By eliminating the need for passengers to reclaim their bags and recheck them upon arrival in the United States, the system can reduce connection times by up to 20 minutes and alleviate congestion at arrival facilities. The system is currently applied to the Atlanta route out of South Korea, with plans to expand to additional US destinations including Minneapolis, Seattle, Los Angeles, Detroit and Salt Lake City.
