Phu Quoc airport shifts to full automation for check-in
Phu Quoc International Airport is set to undergo a major expansion as Vietnam positions itself to meet rising air travel demand and strengthen its role as a regional aviation hub.
A new Terminal 2, scheduled to open in July 2027 ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum, will increase the airport’s capacity to 24 million passengers annually, with long-term scalability to 50 million. This reflects the broader growth across Vietnam’s aviation sector, one of the fastest expanding in the Asia-Pacific region.
The development of the new terminal, led by Sun Group in partnership with SITA, will integrate self-service technologies across check-in, bag drop and boarding.
Passengers will be able to select seats, print boarding passes and bag tags, and drop luggage through automated systems, with biometric technology supporting identity verification throughout the journey.
Sumesh Patel, President, Asia Pacific at SITA, said: “By bringing together SITA’s end-to-end airport technologies, we are delivering smarter, more efficient, and scalable airport operations.”
The Phu Quoc project is a model for wider airport development across Vietnam. Sun Group will partner with SITA for future developments in Phan Thiet, Con Dao and Rach Gia.
