Adelaide Airport expands self-service check-in as part of digital upgrade

Adelaide Airport is rolling out new self-service and cloud-based passenger processing technology from Amadeus, including more than 50 automated bag drops and around 80 self-service check-in kiosks.

Australia’s fifth-busiest airport will install Amadeus Seamless Bag Drop units that can operate in either full self-service or agent-staffed modes. Their side-loading design is also intended to make it easier to handle larger items such as wheelchairs, pushchairs and trolleys.

The airport will also move its passenger processing technology to the cloud using Amadeus Airport Cloud Use Service (ACUS). The platform allows airlines to operate from any check-in or boarding counter, while removing the constraints of fixed network connections so passenger services can be provided from other locations in the departure hall or by roaming agents.

“Moving to Amadeus’ solutions for seamless travel help us maximise the productive use of terminal space, onboard new airline partners more easily and deliver a more connected experience for passengers,” said Dermot O’Neill, Executive General Manager, People, Culture and Customer at Adelaide Airport.

Adelaide will also introduce Amadeus Smart Message to manage communication between airlines and the airport’s baggage infrastructure, replacing the Teletype messaging standard first introduced in the 1960s and still used across the aviation sector.

Seattle airport deploys new passenger flow platform

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) has launched a new passenger flow solution to improve visibility in the terminal.

The Xovis system is designed to measure passenger movement and support operational decision-making in areas where physical constraints make standard sensor placement difficult. According to Xovis, the project uses a tailored installation approach to maintain accurate flow measurement despite infrastructure limitations.

The platform was launched in the summer to help cope with increased travel demand from the World Cup.

SEA Airport Terminal Operations Manager Tristan Campbell said: “This project allows us to extend visibility into a challenging area of the terminal and better support travellers during major events like the World Cup and beyond.”

The deployment gives airport teams additional data on passenger movement, helping them monitor congestion and understand how travellers move through constrained parts of the terminal during periods of elevated demand.
