Dubai Airports is introducing an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered turnaround management system at Dubai International Airport (DXB) to enhance on-time performance and coordination across one of the world’s busiest hubs. Developed in collaboration with technology company Assaia, the system will be deployed across all aircraft stands and used by airlines, ground handlers, and airport operations teams.
The AI platform uses real-time video analytics and machine learning to monitor key turnaround processes such as boarding, refuelling, catering, and baggage handling. By analysing this data, the system provides a detailed picture of stand activity, helping operations teams make quicker, better-informed decisions.
“At Dubai Airports, innovation is driven by purpose – to build smarter, scalable systems that prepare us for the future of air travel,” said Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports. “Deep Turnaround and digitising our gating process data will provide invaluable insights to help minimise delays for passengers and the movement of goods and ultimately support more predictable and efficient operational service.”
The initiative builds on DXB’s ongoing digital transformation efforts. With more than 86 million passengers passing through the airport in 2023, Dubai Airports is investing in technologies that can sustain growth while maintaining punctuality and efficiency.
Collaboration across the airport ecosystem
The rollout is being coordinated with DXB’s major stakeholders, including Emirates Airline, flydubai, and ground-handling partners. Emirates will become the first airline globally to use a full-scale AI-powered turnaround management system across its hub operations.
Nick Moore, Senior Vice President of Passenger Services and Hub Operations at Emirates, said: “When fully implemented, the advanced AI solution is expected to avoid ground-related delays and assist in achieving turnaround times, translating into improved on-time performance and smoother journeys for our customers connecting to and through Dubai.”
The system is designed to foster more effective communication between all parties involved in the turnaround process. By replacing manual reporting with automated data capture, it will provide a shared, real-time view of operations and help identify bottlenecks more quickly.
The AI system’s predictive insights are expected to help reduce disruptions, improving both operational reliability and resource allocation.
In addition to performance benefits, the technology will also support Dubai Airport’s sustainability objectives. More efficient turnarounds mean shorter taxi and idle times for aircraft, reducing fuel consumption and associated emissions.
