How AI is assisting low-vision travellers at Phoenix airport
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has partnered with ReBokeh Vision Technologies to provide free access to an AI-powered visual assistance app for travellers and staff with low vision.
The mobile app uses a smartphone camera and artificial intelligence to help users navigate airport environments more independently. Features include customised contrast, colour, zoom and lighting adjustments, and allows users to ask questions about their surroundings and receive real-time visual guidance. The technology can assist with reading gate information, interpreting departure boards and navigating terminal facilities.
With the deployment, Phoenix Sky Harbor becomes the first airport in the southwestern United States to offer ReBokeh’s technology. The initiative also extends to Deer Valley Airport and Goodyear Airport, both operated by the City of Phoenix.
District 1 Councilwoman Ann O’Brien highlighted the role of AI in supporting passenger autonomy. “By providing customisable, visual tools and AI-powered navigation—at no cost to passengers—we’re removing barriers and giving travellers greater confidence and comfort,” she said. “This is about making sure every person can navigate our airports safely, seamlessly, and with dignity.”
The technology is designed for the approximately 90 percent of blind and low-vision individuals who retain some functional sight, offering an additional layer of support alongside existing airport accessibility services.
