New AI-assisted screening introduced in Frankfurt
Frankfurt Airport has deployed a new detection system across its security checkpoints, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to identify prohibited items. The Automated Prohibited Item Detection System (APIDS) is now in operation in all terminals, assisting with image assessment from more than 50 CT scanners.
The software employs artificial intelligence to flag potential prohibited items in cabin baggage during X-ray screening but security officers remain responsible for reviewing flagged images and making final decisions.
The launch follows a pilot phase supported by the European Union and a certification process involving airport operator Fraport, the German Federal Police and the Federal Ministry of the Interior.
“On the basis of joint intensive testing of the APID system over the course of several months, Fraport and the German Federal Police were able to obtain valuable results from its ongoing operation,” said Kerstin Kohlmetz, President of the Federal Police Office at Frankfurt Airport. “These then played an important role in getting it certified and approved for use.”
The rollout follows broader upgrades at Frankfurt, including redesigned security lanes and expanded CT screening technology. With APIDS now operational, the airport is combining automated image analysis with human oversight to strengthen screening consistency while facilitating passenger throughput.
