Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) is the proprietary, revenue-generating department of the City of Los Angeles responsible for owning and operating Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Van Nuys Airport (VNY). Established in 1928 as the Los Angeles Department of Airports, it was renamed LAWA in 1997 to reflect its expanding global role. LAX serves as the primary international gateway to Southern California, ranking as the eighth-busiest airport in the world, handling over 75 million passengers in 2023. VNY is one of the busiest general aviation airports globally, catering to private, corporate, and charter flights. LAWA also oversees aviation-related properties near Palmdale Regional Airport (PMD). The organization is governed by a seven-member Board of Airport Commissioners appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council, with daily operations managed by a workforce of approximately 3,000 employees.
LAWA's mission is to "serve the world—connecting people, places, and cultures" by ensuring safe, secure, and efficient airport operations. The organization emphasizes sustainability, innovation, and community engagement. Notably, LAWA is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045 and is investing in infrastructure projects like the LAX Automated People Mover to enhance passenger experience and reduce environmental impact. Through its Business, Jobs, and Social Responsibility division, LAWA strives to maximize access to business and job opportunities, ensuring that local, diverse communities benefit from its investments.
